Lesson 4 – Running the Machine
Objective: Student will demonstrate proper procedures for setting up and putting away the sewing machine, and practice skills for running the machine.
Standard: Textiles 2.3 Demonstrate textile production skills
Materials: Sewing Machines, driving test, document camera, projector, SMART board
Time: 2 - 45 minutes
Day One
Introduction: (5 minutes)
*Tell me one thing you learned yesterday.
*Discuss the cost machine for to emphasize the importance of safe handling and setting up the machine.
Demonstration/Discussion: (10 minutes)
*Demonstrate the proper procedure for setting up of the machine.
-Removing from storage/case
-Placement on work surface
-Hooking up power cords
-Turning on
*Check for understanding – questions – thumbs up/thumbs down
Practice: (5 minutes)
*With table partner, students will move to the sewing counters and set up a machine as per the demonstration
Demonstration: (10 minutes)
*Demonstrate the proper putting the sewing machine
-Turning off
-Disconnecting power
-Case/Returning to storage
*Check for understanding – questions – thumbs up/thumbs down
Practice: (5 minutes)
*With table partner, students will move to the sewing counters and put the machines away as per the demonstration.
Demonstration: (5 minutes)
*Students will watch a demonstration of Running/Driving a sewing machine
Closure and Assessment: (5 minutes)
Exit ticket – What is one new thing you learned to day? What is one question you have?
Informal observation of set up and clean up process.
Day Two
Introduction: (5 minutes)
*Turn to your table partner – discuss the process of setting up the sewing machine.
Demonstration/Discussion: (10 minutes)
*Demonstrate proper sewing techniques using the document camera and overhead project
-lining up to the needle
-raising and lowering the presser foot
-where to place and keep your hands, pressure on paper
-how to guide the fabric
-resetting the paper to start a new line
-speed control
*Check for understanding – questions – thumbs up/thumbs down
Practice: (25 minutes)
*With table partner, students will move to the sewing counters and set up a machine
*Taking turns – students will practice running the machine while stitching on paper
-Straight lines, curves, circles and pinwheel
Closure/Assessment: (5 minutes)
*With table partner, students will move to the sewing counters and put the machines away.
*Assessment is informal and ongoing during the practice session – evaluate lines as the student complete the lines pointing out positives and give suggestions for improvement.
