Lesson 2 – Sewing Skills Terminology
Objective: Students will be able to define sewing terminology and describe their function in relation to sewing construction.
Standards: Textiles 2.1 – Recognize textile production terms
Materials: Fill in the blank notes, fabric examples of sewing techniques, Prezi on Sewing Techniques, Sewing Vocabulary Crossword, Sewing Vocabulary Crossword wordlist
Time: 45 minutes
Introduction: (5 minutes)
*Tell me one thing you learned yesterday.
*There is more to sewing than just knowing about the machine. Read the following phrase. “The seam allowance of each seam should measure 5/8 of an inch and the backstitch should secure both ends. All selvages should be removed and the raw edged should either be finished with a hem or a zigzag stitch.”
What did you understand? Could you follow these directions? What do you need to know?
Key Idea: (25 minutes)
Sewing Vocabulary – Students will complete their Fill in the Blank notes using images and descriptions our discussion. As we discuss the various terms, use a variety of descriptions and examples to enhance the students’ mastery of content. Pass physical examples of each of the different vocabulary words and have the students point out where each technique can be found on their clothing.
Practice: (10 minutes)
Pass out the tiered assignment. Students are defining vocabulary words. Encourage the student to try as much as possible without their notes, and refer to the notes when they are having difficulty.
Closure and Assessment: (5 minutes)
Exit ticket – What is one new thing you learned to day? What is one question you have?
Assessment – completion and accuracy of the assignment
